7 Tips for Preventing Build Up of Dental Plaque

Plaque is formed from the byproducts of proteins and food in general that mix together and form a film on your teeth. Because of this, even with the help of dentists their professional oral checkups and you taking care of your teeth will not be enough to prevent dental plaque from building up. That being said, these tips mentioned below will help immensely in keeping dental plaque at bay.

Brushing Daily

Plaque can easily be removed by brushing daily. Brushing on a daily basis also prevents tartar. Tartar is a mineral building up that is seen above the gumline. Common signs of it are the yellowing or browning to teeth or gums. The best practice for brushing is to use a soft-bristled toothbrush, brushing twice per day, and doing so for two minutes every time. 

Floss Regularly

Regardless of how well you brush your teeth, you still want to be flossing. Flossing regularly will help to remove plaque that’s building up between your teeth. This method will also keep tartar at bay not to mention floss is the only method that can deal with plaque and tartar between your teeth.

Rinse Daily

Use mouthwash on a daily basis and as a finishing touch to your oral care routine. Mouthwash will destroy bacteria that can assist in plaque build up.

Furthermore rinsing with water is acceptable in times where you just had a meal, but don’t have the time to brush your teeth. Rinsing out your mouth with water will help in reducing the plaque acids that form from the food.

Keep Up With Dental Checkups

Even the most rigorous oral care routine, you can still miss plaque. Furthermore it could be in a hard to spot place. Because of this, you want to be good about seeing your dentist on a consistent basis for cleaning and teeth inspection. The ADA (American Dental Association) recommends that you visit a dentist once every 6 months. Depending on your dental needs, those visits may occur more often.

By seeing a dentist, they’ll be able to take care of your dental needs. Neglecting the health of your teeth will put you in a higher risk of developing cavities or even losing your teeth.

Eat Plenty Of Fruits And Vegetables

When your mouth is hydrated you’ll be lessening your risk of your teeth decaying. A dry mouth can lead to decaying. By eating fruits and vegetables, you are increasing saliva flow. Furthermore this saliva flow naturally removes a portion of plaque and bacteria. For the best results, eat fruits and vegetables with the skin on.

Resist Sweets

This shouldn’t be a major issue if you have plenty of fruits and vegetables in your diet as fruits naturally have sugar which quells sugar cravings. However eating and drinking foods that are high in added sugar only strengthen the bacteria. Furthermore foods and beverages that are soft and sticky damage your teeth even more like gum. 

Taking Non-Sugar Gum

Speaking of gum, non-sugary gum can help in preventing plaque build up too. Although used more as an alternative like rinsing your mouth with water, this can keep some plaque at bay. Because of its sticky nature, it can collect some, but not all.
